Changing Faces of The University Management System

Back in the past, the common university management system was very much complicated. Even the day to day working and management of large educational institutions seemed to be a daunting task. However, with time, the need for a planned management system was felt, and many software companies worked hard to find a platform that would help the management and admin of various colleges and universities to combine and regulate the entire organization. ERP based software was the resultant product. There are numerous ERP software systems in the market, although, the functions are not always the same. For those willing to know what advanced ERP systems can do, listed below are some functions.

1. Integration of functions and departments: There are many functions within an organization, which includes regular modules like payroll, admissions, accounts, audit, inventory, fees and many others. ERP based software integrates all these functions in one. The management can integrate all the functioning departments and modules into one. This is something that traditional systems failed to execute.

2. Offers better system for storage: The amount of data and information gathered in a university in one day is monumental. As such, management and storage of data is a gigantic concern. An advanced ERP based system makes it possible to save and store data on a secure system where the data cannot be manipulated and changed. The data gathered from various departments will be gathered on a server, which will be accessible by authorized personnel and officials only.

3. Addable modules for better functionality: Most ERP software systems designed by popular companies have addable modules. These modules are meant to increase the power of management in better sorting and controlling. This may include use of biometric systems, GPS systems, and smart cards for students, mobile interface, etc. While it may seem that these modules are unwanted expenditures, taking a look at global colleges and universities will change the concept. Majority of top colleges and universities are already having such systems.

4. Better audit and accountability: Regulatory and audit authorities are always interested in the performance of the institution. As such, the ERP software will enable the management to make better presentations to concerned bodies. Real time reports can be generated on the need without having the entire accounts department people work on it.

5. Empowering the main management: The top level management always wants to strengthen its control on the university, which is not always possible through traditional systems. ERP software enables the management to take a close look to each and every department and function.

These are only some vital functions of ERP software. However, there are many other added advantages of such advanced systems that will be experienced by university management system after implementation. Advanced ERP software systems designed by popular systems are easy to implement and install, and trusted software companies offer complete help on customization. Apart from improving the regular management, ERP software will also improve the relations and interaction with students and staff, as there will be unidirectional flow of communication.

Why All Businesses Should Be on a Cafeteria 125 Plan

So what in the world is a Cafeteria 125 Plan anyway? If you don't know what it is, you don't have it in place. And you might be needlessly throwing money out the proverbial window by not having it in place. The plan is this: it allows you to pre-tax such payroll deductions as insurance premiums, savings account contributions, 401k contributions, etc. Ok. what does pre-tax mean?

Pre-taxing a deduction is not as complicated as it sounds. There is your gross pay and your net pay. Your gross pay is your payment for work done based on your hourly wage or salary for that pay period. Your net pay is what you actually get after the gross pay is taxed on a local, state and federal level. Pre-taxing is simply reducing an employee's gross pay with a specified deduction or deductions prior to governmental taxing. Doing this lessens the amount of tax paid to the government. Here is an example:

Not pre-taxed
00 gross pay
-250 taxation (25%)
0 net pay
-0 insurance premium
0 take home pay

Why All Businesses Should Be on a Cafeteria 125 Plan

Pre-taxed
00 gross pay
-0 insurance premiums
0 gross pay after pre-tax deductions
-5 taxation (25%)
5 take home pay

So you just saved your employee by simply adding a cafeteria plan. Ok. That's good for the employee (which is ultimately good for you), but what about your overall payroll numbers? Let's do some more numbers:

Not pre-taxed
0000 gross payroll
-25000 taxation (25%)
000 net payroll
-000 insurance premium
000 actual net payroll

Pre-taxed
0000 gross payroll
-000 insurance premiums
000 gross payroll after pre-tax deductions
-500 taxation (25%)
500 actual net payroll

As you can see, in this example of a payroll of 0,000, you get to deduct more for payroll (reducing your capital gains taxes) and you save 00 in payroll taxes. All of this for simply putting in a cafeteria 125 plan! Starting to make sense now?

Some supplemental health insurance companies will actually put in place a pre-tax plan for premiums at no extra cost, allowing you to save some money, as illustrated above. And by adding supplements, you are allowed greater flexibility in making future healthcare decisions. Medical supplements have been around for several decades, though few companies offer it to their employees. These plans range from typical supplements like vision and dental to more specific programs like accident and cancer plans.
